12 blessings of the righteous (with Bible verses)

Quick answer

The Bible promises the righteous God’s favor and protection, answered prayer, deliverance from trouble, provision, stability, fruitfulness, boldness, guidance, joy, blessing on their children, a lasting legacy and eternal life. Each is listed below with the verses that support it. These are gifts of grace to those made right with God through faith, not wages for being good.

The word “righteous” appears hundreds of times in Scripture, and again and again it comes with a promise attached. The Psalms and Proverbs in particular paint a picture of a life that God watches over, sustains and blesses.

Before we look at the blessings, it is worth asking the question the whole Bible answers: who are the righteous?

Who are “the righteous”?

Scripture is honest that no one is righteous on their own merit. Righteousness is first a gift: God credits it to everyone who trusts in Jesus Christ.

That gift then shapes how we live. The righteous are people who, having been made right with God, walk in His ways: doing justly, loving mercy and walking humbly with Him.

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

Romans 3:10 (KJV)

Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

Romans 3:22 (KJV)

For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

2 Corinthians 5:21 (KJV)

He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

Micah 6:8 (KJV)

1. God’s favor surrounds them like a shield

The first blessing is God Himself. His favor is not a mood that comes and goes; it encircles the righteous like a soldier’s shield.

For thou, LORD, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield.

Psalm 5:12 (KJV)

2. God hears their prayers

The Lord is attentive to the cry of His people. Prayer is never wasted breath; it is heard by the One who can act.

The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.

Psalm 34:15 (KJV)

The LORD is far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.

Proverbs 15:29 (KJV)

The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

James 5:16 (KJV)

3. Deliverance in times of trouble

The Bible never promises the righteous an easy life. It promises something better: that God will bring them through every trial.

The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.

Psalm 34:17 (KJV)

Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.

Psalm 34:19 (KJV)

4. Provision for their needs

God takes care of His own. When we put His kingdom first, He promises to supply what we truly need.

I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.

Psalm 37:25 (KJV)

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

Matthew 6:33 (KJV)

5. Stability that storms cannot shake

Storms come to everyone. The righteous are not spared the wind, but they are built on a foundation that holds.

Cast thy burden upon the LORD, and he shall sustain thee: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.

Psalm 55:22 (KJV)

As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.

Proverbs 10:25 (KJV)

6. A fruitful, flourishing life

Scripture often pictures the righteous as healthy trees: rooted near water, growing tall and bearing fruit in season.

The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree: he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

Psalm 92:12 (KJV)

And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.

Psalm 1:3 (KJV)

7. Boldness and courage

A clear conscience before God produces courage. The righteous do not have to look over their shoulder.

The wicked flee when no man pursueth: but the righteous are bold as a lion.

Proverbs 28:1 (KJV)

8. A path that grows brighter

God leads the righteous step by step. Like the sunrise, their way becomes clearer the further they walk with Him.

But the path of the just is as the shining light, that shineth more and more unto the perfect day.

Proverbs 4:18 (KJV)

9. Gladness and joy in the Lord

The joy of the righteous does not depend on circumstances. It is rooted in God Himself, and He sows it like seed.

The righteous shall be glad in the LORD, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.

Psalm 64:10 (KJV)

Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart.

Psalm 97:11 (KJV)

10. Blessing that reaches their children

A life of faith and integrity overflows to the next generation. Children see it, learn it and are blessed by it.

The just man walketh in his integrity: his children are blessed after him.

Proverbs 20:7 (KJV)

His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.

Psalm 112:2 (KJV)

11. A name that is remembered

The righteous leave a legacy. Long after they are gone, their memory continues to bless others.

The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot.

Proverbs 10:7 (KJV)

Surely he shall not be moved for ever: the righteous shall be in everlasting remembrance.

Psalm 112:6 (KJV)

12. Safety in God, hope beyond death and eternal life

The greatest blessing of all is forever. The righteous run to God as their refuge now, and their hope does not end at the grave.

The name of the LORD is a strong tower: the righteous runneth into it, and is safe.

Proverbs 18:10 (KJV)

The wicked is driven away in his wickedness: but the righteous hath hope in his death.

Proverbs 14:32 (KJV)

And these shall go away into everlasting punishment: but the righteous into life eternal.

Matthew 25:46 (KJV)

A word of balance

These promises are not a formula for wealth or an easy life. Joseph sat in prison, Job lost everything and Paul was shipwrecked, yet each was righteous before God. Psalm 34:19 holds both truths together: many afflictions, and deliverance from them all.

The blessings of the righteous are, above all, the blessing of belonging to God: His presence now and His promises for eternity.

Teaching this to kids and youth

  • Memory verse: Psalm 92:12 is short and visual. Have kids act out a palm tree swaying and a cedar growing tall.
  • Tree craft: draw a tree and write one blessing on each leaf, with its verse reference on the roots.
  • Righteous heroes: play Who Am I? with Noah, Joseph, Daniel and Ruth, then ask how God blessed each one through hard times. Genesis 6:9 says Noah “was a just man… and Noah walked with God.”
  • Review game: put the twelve blessings on Bible bingo cards or turn them into charades prompts.
